Most people start GLP-1 medications for one reason: weight loss.
But some of the most important findings from recent clinical trials have nothing to do with the scale.
In this week’s Biohacker Bulletin video, I walk through five documented benefits that often go unmentioned:
1. Heart protection. In the SELECT trial, semaglutide reduced major cardiovascular events by about 20% in adults with overweight or obesity and existing heart disease.
2. Kidney protection. In the FLOW trial, semaglutide reduced kidney and cardiovascular complications by about 24% in adults with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease.
3. Liver health. In the ESSENCE trial, semaglutide resolved fatty liver inflammation (MASH) without worsening scarring in a larger share of people than placebo.
4. Knee pain. In the STEP 9 trial, semaglutide reduced knee osteoarthritis pain and improved physical function in adults with obesity.
5. Sleep apnea. In the SURMOUNT-OSA trials, tirzepatide substantially reduced sleep apnea severity in adults with obesity. It did not replace CPAP for most people in the study.
These are trial findings, not guarantees. Results vary, these medications carry risks, and they aren’t right for everyone. Talk with your prescriber before making any decisions.
